Hen party group learning a routine together

RuPaul Hen Party Dance Class SwanseaCroeso, queens.

Drag handed everybody the vocabulary: the walk, the dip, the drop that gets filmed and rarely lands. A RuPaul hen party dance class takes all of that and turns it into something twelve people can pull off together on a Saturday afternoon, in the room we hire on Oystermouth Road or at your hen house anywhere from Mumbles to Carmarthen. Your teacher builds her own number for the group rather than teaching a set piece. The fee is £185 for the party over ninety minutes or £160 over sixty, and the venue’s hire cost is quoted next to it — no experience, no heels and no shame required.

Check my date

Start your engines.

Send a date, a rough number of heads and a start time you fancy. A written answer lands inside the day — free or not, where it would happen, and both of the figures involved. If the group has not ruled out a different theme yet, take the slot anyway — theme is the easy part to change.

Why the runway beats a night out

Everyone can walk.

Not everyone can dance, but everyone can cross a room like the room was expecting them, and that is most of this. A drag-flavoured hen do dance class swaps technical difficulty for nerve, which is exactly why it works on a party where one person teaches spin classes and another has not moved on purpose since 2011. Of all the hen party ideas fired into a group chat at midnight, this is one of the very few that is as good the next morning as it sounded at the time.

For the avoidance of doubt: we are a Swansea dance school and nothing to do with the television programme, its cast or the people who make it. What we teach is the style the show made famous, taught by somebody who does this every week of the year.

i.

Wigs are your problem. There is no wardrobe here. Whatever the party arrives in, full face or full high street, is the look for the afternoon.

ii.

Nerve outranks ability. Almost the only dance hen party where confidence scores higher than coordination, and the footage shows it.

iii.

Sceptics convert fastest. It reads as performing rather than exercising, which disarms the two people who announced they would be watching.

Slotting a runway into the weekend

The walk works better before the makeup does. Most parties take the mid-afternoon slot on Oystermouth Road, go back to get properly ready, then arrive on Wind Street with noticeably more front than they left with. Groups based out on Gower have us come to the house and use the hallway as the runway, which produces messier footage and, on balance, better footage. Either way the filming is done while everybody still has the energy for it.

Among hen party activities, very few hand the group a permanently improved way of entering a room.

The room we hire sits on Oystermouth Road and gives you a long clear floor, which for this theme matters more than mirrors do — a runway needs distance rather than reflections. It is five minutes from the Marina for photographs once the class is done.

You will have the hire figure in writing before the date is held. If a larger party needs a larger room, we say what that changes beforehand instead of afterwards.

the things organisers ask before they book ↓

Do we need heels for a RuPaul class?+

Bring them if you fancy it, though nothing depends on it. Trainers make the first hour easier and most groups put heels on for the filmed run and nothing else. Bring whichever you already own, since footwear is not something that turns up with the teacher.

Is there lip syncing as well as dancing?+

There is mouthing, mugging and a great deal of pointing at the camera. Whether that qualifies depends on how generous you are feeling. Your teacher puts it on the table early and the group’s reaction settles the matter.

Can men or non-hens join in?+

Yes. The fee is for the room rather than for the person, so who stands in it is entirely up to you. Plenty of groups bring brothers, dads and the friend who is not officially on the hen but is unmistakably on the hen.

What does a RuPaul hen class cost in Swansea?+

Ninety minutes is £185 and an hour is £160, however the party splits, with the venue’s hire cost written out separately. Run it where you are staying and that second figure never appears.

None of us have danced before. Does that matter?+

It is close to an advantage, since there is no technique to unlearn and half the material is walking, posing and timing. Nobody gets picked out for being the worst — the teacher is far too busy picking somebody out for being the loudest.

Will the video be as good as it sounds?+

Better, usually, and worse for the people in it. One clean run gets filmed near the end on your own phones. We do not keep, host or publish any of it, so where it ends up is the group’s decision entirely.

Sashay away elsewhere.
